In January, a family and their dog lost their home to a fire, which also claimed the lives of two cats, a dog, and a litter of puppies. Their dog, Lexi Ann, survived the blaze, but suffered severe burns. Due to her injuries and their inability to care for her, her family considered euthanasia.
A vet tech at the vet’s office fell in love with Lexi and contacted Ruff Start Rescue for help. According to Ruff Start Rescue, Lexi was able to escape from the fire because her plastic kennel melted around her, causing severe burns.
She was left with singed fur and burns on her feet, sides, nipples, and face.
Sarah Hecklinski and her family fostered Lexi during her recovery.
Despite her injuries, Lexi’s condition improved every day, and her foster family shared her progress on Instagram. Firefighter Travis Oliver saw Lexi’s pictures and fell in love with her. He applied to adopt her, but was initially denied due to living out of state.
After explaining why he wanted to adopt her and getting help from Hecklinski, he was approved.
Several months after the fire, Lexi got a second chance with Oliver, who plans to give her the best life possible and hopes to bring her to a camp for burn victims in Indiana to help others in their healing.
