Though it can be difficult, volunteering in animal rescue allows for times of pure delight made possible by constant commitment.
From Nova Scotia, Canada, Joey Wagner, a marine biologist, volunteers at the Baie Ste. Marie Animal Society. 2013 saw Joey get a disturbing call regarding a pit bull mix puppy named Mojo, badly mistreated and in great need of care. Joey arrived and was met with the sight of a dog struggling for life.
Quickly transferred to Parade Street Vet, PEI Small Animal Hospital, Mojo had treatment for severe dehydration and demodectic mange. Just three months old, Mojo was covered in agonising mite bites and had lost all of his fur. Joey saw Mojo’s suffering personally as the pup cried through his treatment.
“When Mojo was turned in, it was a tornado of emotions,” Joey said on Facebook. “Although there were many adoption questions, at the time his severe medical condition made it impossible.”
Joey and his wife Leta grew rather fond to Mojo throughout his fight to survive. Mojo became a ray of hope for many who travelled his path since, despite all the violence he went through, he showed amazing generosity and forgiveness.
“Mojo was really resilient,” Joey said.
Joey was first in queue to finish the adoption paperwork when the time came for Mojo to settle into his permanently home. The shelter authorised the adoption immediately since he was so committed to Mojo’s recuperation. Nothing, though, could equip Joey for the sheer delight of Mojo’s reaction at their adoption day reunion.
When Mojo saw Joey, his tail wagged fiercely and he showered love and devotion upon her. Driven with thanks, Mojo couldn’t get close enough to his new dad to show his delight with every wriggle and nuzzle. Joey found himself grinning as Mojo showed his thanks for a new beginning in life.
“He definitely remembers you,” the veterinarian said as Mojo greeted Joey fervently for additional licks and embraces. That reunion was one of sheer delight.
Alex saved a mistreated, stray puppy and given him a lifetime home full of love and care in a touching display of kindness. Found cold and undernourished on the streets, the dog had lived a difficult existence before Alex intervened. Alex was brought to tears when he spotted the small, forlorn critter on his regular drive and decided right away to assist.
Alex gently gathered up the shaking puppy—later known as Buddy—then brought him to a nearby veterinarian facility. The veterinarian verified Buddy needed emergency medical assistance since he was clearly suffering from extreme neglect. Alex made little effort at making sure Buddy got the required treatment—including immunisations, a good diet, and a comfortable spot for recovery.
Alex’s dedication to his new friend strengthened as Buddy’s health got better. He set aside a comfortable area in his house where Buddy could feel loved and safe with soft bedding and toys. Alex gave Buddy the care and attention he had been denied as well as affection.
Buddy underwent very amazing metamorphosis. From a malnourished stray, he grew to be a happy, healthy dog in his new home. Alex’s noble deed of saving Buddy not only preserved a life but also forged a lifetime of love and loyalty.
Joey and Leta have made sure Mojo leads a content, well-kept existence as a beloved family member ever then. Mojo’s fur never really grown back, but it hasn’t depressed him in the least. The Wagners keep telling Mojo’s tale to increase awareness of and support for animal rescue groups.
The touching response of Mojo is evidence of the strong emotional ties animals create and their ability for thanksfulness. Joey’s commitment to Mojo during his lowest points has created an enduring link between them that shows how compassion and love could change a life.
